About Paddy O’Dwyer

Paddy O’Dwyer was a musician and teller of tall tales who could be seen cycling daily on a black Raleigh pushbike from his home in the town to his farm on the town’s edge.

He was featured on RTÉ Radio’s Doc on 1 Where are the Boys of the Village Tonight giving a first hand account of the burning of Ennistymon by British forces in September 1920 when he was 14 years old. His account is both poignant and humourous by turns.

He has also been recorded on CD telling his humourous tales, playing his eclectic repertoire on piano, and singing songs that were popular in the 1920’s.

Paddy O’Dwyer died suddenly in December 1988. Among his possessions was a large collection of postcards he had received from all over the world written by the many visitors to Ennistymon who had met him, if only briefly, but were so entertained by the spontaneity of his humour that they wanted to keep in touch..

A voice that entertained generations is silenced. His passing leaves a space that cannot be filled.

So we offer this Pushbike Prize that he may be remembered and celebrated for his  creative wit and the joy that it gave to the many people who came in contact with him .
